225/45 18 Tyre Review Highlights

Yokohama BluEarth Es ES32 rated 91% while driving a Skoda
Driving on mostly motorways for 25000 average miles
These tyres are all that I put on my car, they are such a good all round tyre the tyres last really well but you can tell when they are nearing the tread wear depth marker, just about to put my 3rd set on the car, I do a lot of of miles.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 rated 89% while driving a BMW 320D xDrive Gran Turismo
Driving on a combination of roads for 1000 spirited miles
Very good tyre, I'm very pleased with them. Exactly what I expected, very good mix between performance/price/comfort.
Are very quiet, after 80 km/h I hear only some noise from the wind. Road feedback is very good, are very good for 18" wheels, I know very well what's happening with stearing of the car on cornering even at higher speed, good sidewall enforcement as well.
I looked for competition but were much more expensive and didn't have the same properties especially for noise level.
I used tyres from competition, premium brands but I came many times back to GoodYear because they have the good mix for me.
Definitely I will buy them again. Very good job Goodyear.

Michelin Pilot Sport 5 rated 99% while driving a BMW 420d
Driving on a combination of roads for 37000 spirited miles
So after 20 years of getting GY's (loved most of them), Continental (loved all of them), Pirelli (hated most of them) and Bridgestone (hated all of them), I got first time ever Michelin PS5 2 years ago on my 4 series coupe Bmw, they're 225/45/18 size. After that I was so amazed by Michelin generally that I changed to them on all of my cars including 911 997 and as long as they make them this good I'll keep buying them. The wear is amazing and like they told me in the tire shop (that they will stay the same all their legal life) they did. So after 60k km, yes 60k km they were down to legal limit and just today I put a set of new ones. The GY and Continental always performed well at the beginning but after half of the life it would go significantly down. This performed 50% better in wear than ever before. Max I got before on any tyre was 40k km. Yes compared to Pirelli Cinturato P7 run flats the car was equipped from new there is a bit of less steering precision but my God have well they keep corners at Dolomiti mountain roads both in wet and dry and all the way at 50k km, I could actually say that only at around 55k km the back end was much happier going out. I was so blown away by them that I also got for the same car winter Alpin 5 tires and they are amazing as well. I can just say (in my case other people can have different opinions) there is Michelin and then there are other tires.

Vredestein Ultrac Pro rated 83% while driving a BMW 325d M Sport
Driving on mostly motorways for 3000 spirited miles
Firstly, the Ultrac Pro is a sexy tire. The sidewall is designed by italodesign, and it really looks good. Dry grip (intermediate temps ~10-20°C) is very good. The car feels to have endless grip and you really feel comfortable pushing some twisty roads. Obviously, the warmer it got, the stickier the tire was. The Ultrac Pro seems to like temperature.
Wet grip is also very handsome. You really feel comfortable driving in heavy rain, and the grip is also very reassuring. Especially in the wet

Michelin X Ice North 4 rated 83% while driving a Ford Focus mk2
Driving on a combination of roads for 6 average miles
Coming from Finland, a country of winter snow and studs. Have these on two cars
- 2007 Focus Cabrio
- 1998 996 C2

In most winnter conditions amazing grip level. However, two shortcomings. 1) The modern light studs do not penetrate well if there is loose snow on top of hard snor/icy surface. Obviously this has more to do with regulations rather than the tyre brand and model. 2) These modern silica tyres seem to collect a layer of snow in slow speeds, say below 30..40 km/h . Both these properties make the tyres a bit Jekyll and Hyde. At best it gives enormous amount of grip but then you come on loose snow and you think you are driving very slow - and suddenly you have absolutely no grip. I wish we could still have the longer studs. I can tell it is not nice to get the impression of good grip for some 50 km (0.3 < muu < 0.5) and then in an open place wind has collected snow on the hard snow surface and a deer runs into your lights and you find absolutely no grip at all (like muu = 0.05). Fortunately I had my insurances. I dont think this would have happened with the old style big block, long heavy stud Hakkapeliittas. Those would have not given the level of grip on the 50 km stretch but they would have lost pretty much nothing coming to the loose snow.

What impresses me is the strong stud base. The cavity seems wrapped with a very strong compound and the studs seem to not come off at all. The construction of the tyre seems very good for winter purposes, not too stiff nor too soft side wall. Subjectively I think I would prefer a sharper shoulder but that is more like an image in my head rather than supported by my driving experience.

If I was to develop this tyre I would look into the slow speed attached snow layer phenomenom - perhaps on all the silica tyres. I also would like to try something like raised tread on the lines of studs to get the modern studs penetrate better the loose snow on top of the hard.

I know one problem with the winter tyre testing is that the tracks are always similar to get good comparability. But in real life the surfaces vary much more in winter conditions and a good winter tyre should even the grip levels to predictable. As good as the X-Ice 4 is it is not the most predictable tyre. Fortunately you can learn to predict the places where you will loose the grip. I find this all more of a result of rather compromized regulations than tyre makes development work.

Driving on mostly town for 24800 spirited miles
Great tyres for road and track, if you like.
Not too noisy but not a quiet tire.
Wear is great. Mine have seen a few trackdays and around 40000km and there is still plenty of tire left.
If you find them for a good price, BUY!

Three A Farroad FRD 26 rated 23% while driving a Toyota Mark X 2.5 V6
Driving on a combination of roads for 1000 average miles
Bought this 4 pcs tires on Nov 2023 - Drove less than 5k km. 1 of the tire swollen. Lucky able to claim under warranty.
Found the road vibration is rough, center console is vibrating slightly. 3 times done tires balancing but doesn't help.

Inflate the tires to 28 bar pressure to lessen the roughness and vibration.
Car is push and pull to left and right when roll over the patch road ( need to hold the steering wheel tightly )

Driving the the highway on hot day with temperature at 36celcius, able to feel the tire road noise much obvious. Suddenly when the sky open up , the tires less vibration and noisy.

Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 rated 79% while driving a BMW M340I X Drive
Driving on a combination of roads for 9000 easy going miles
Bought the tires as dedicated winter set, 225/45 / 255/40 R18. After one season i can highly recommend the tires for daily driving. They have excellent driving comfort, fuel efficiency and also are very quiet. Although they produce whistling/howling sound at certain speeds and pavement type, but its barely noticeable. Snow grip is very good and predictable, driving on ice is bit problematic though...but thats a general problem. On dry and wet the tire has good grip, and is pretty predictable but there is a certain level of numbness as to be expected from winter tire. After 9000 miles tires are showing light wear along the outer edges of tire tread. Only concern would be high speed cornering and stability. Around 140-50kmh you get a feeling of body roll although the grip seems to be okay, likely caused by higher tire profile and the fact its a dedicated winter tire. In a straight line car starts to feel unstable around 200-210 km/h.

Bridgestone Turanza T005 rated 69% while driving a BMW M340I X Drive
Driving on a combination of roads for 6000 average miles
Car arrived with the combination of 225/45 R18 in front and 255/40 R18 in back, non-RFT version. Ride comfort was pretty good, along with very good fuel efficiency, showing very little wear after 8000-9000km. When driving normal it has good grip dry, in wet its pretty unpredictable sometimes the rear slipped even at low speed, in straight line it seems to have no problem even under full throttle nor does it seem to be prone to aquaplaning under 90km/h in heavy rain. I was happy with the braking performance in both dry and wet. When the car is driven hard, the tires behave very poorly until they get warm, which also takes some time. If cold, the grip is unpredictable, randomly slipping even on dry with no feedback when its gonna break, after few moments it usually hooks back up. But you dont have a very good control over the car. Once you get the tires hot it has insane grip compared at least compared to when the tires are cold, however they are still bit unpredictable, and the tire profile seems to be bit too much for enthusiastic driving over corners. Can't really comment on wet grip when the tire is warm/hot since it has random problems with slipping even in regular driving...i never dared to try. Another major issue is high speed stability, over 190-200km/h it starts to "float around" and over 220-230 it becomes straight up dangerous to drive even in straight line. Which is weird since the tire is Y rated, and i only experienced this with winter tires before. Overall i can recommend the tire for daily driving, offers very good fuel efficiency along with ride comfort and noise. However its unsuitable if the car will be driven hard often, mainly due to lack of feedback and predictability in combination with BMW numb steering in G-series... Might be more suitable for FWD or front biased car like audi since it has no issues with grip in the front or seem to be prone to under steer. Switching to R19 225/40, 255/35 Continental SC7 for this summer season.

Extremely quiet tire with good wet grip after the first 1000+ km. Compared to the replaced Hankook Winter I*Cept evo2 W320, the new Nexen tires are more comfortable.
