The Austone SP 901 is a budget Central European winter tyre with strong snow-braking and snow-handling results in some tests. Repeated weaknesses in wet braking, aquaplaning resistance and handling prevent a balanced all-weather assessment.
The Austone SP 901 has a marked split between snow ability and wet-road performance. It led snow braking in ADAC’s 2023 16-inch test and snow handling in the 2023 Auto Bild Sportscars comparison, which also placed it 2nd in snow braking. ADAC praised precise snow handling and recorded the lowest noise measurement. Those are useful positives for a winter tyre, but they did not prevent last place overall for ADAC or a Not Recommended verdict from Sportscars.
Wet braking and aquaplaning were last in both detailed 2023 tests, and both verdicts criticised vague steering and unbalanced behaviour. Auto Bild’s larger 2023 braking comparison was an unusual better result at 24th of 54 overall, yet wet braking still trailed the best by 19.7%; the 2022 wet deficit was 33.8%. Dry braking also varied between tests. With four independent comparisons and no owner summary here, the assessment cannot establish long-term use, but the repeated wet-road weaknesses mean the snow strengths alone offer little support for a driver seeking consistent winter performance across changing conditions.
