The 2021 Auto Bild winter tyre test started its life as a
fifty tyre wet and snow braking test, with the best performing twenty tyres proceeding to this test. This means the twenty tyres in this test are some of the best winter tyres for 2021 on the market!
Additionally Auto Bild have included the usual reference summer tyre, but also a budget winter tyre. It wasn't clear from the article how this tyre was chosen, but I imagine it was one of the worst tyres from the fifty tyre braking test intended to highlight just how bad cheap tyres can be. The results confirm the theory, with the cheap winter tyre performing well below average in nearly all tests.
The results, as always, were close at the top, with the new Continental WinterContact TS870 narrowly beating the Michelin Alpin 6. The new German tyre had a very consistent test, performing well in nearly all categories, and having the best wear on test!
In joint third are the Kleber Krisalp HP3 and Vredestein Wintrac. Both these tyres performed extremely well considering their "mid range" price point, and they beat the premium tyres from Bridgestone, Hankook and Goodyear.
Auto Bild are one of the few publications able to do wear tests. Rather than very expensive real world wear, the wear test for this was done on a drum. As always, it highlights certain running theme in tests, Continental are up there with Michelin in wear, and Bridgestone make excellent tyres with outstanding grip in the wet, especially wet braking, but it comes at the expense of treadlife.
Dry
A summer tyre will nearly always beat a winter tyre in the dry, whatever the temperature, however in this test the summer tyre had an impressively big advantage in the dry, stopping the car over seven meters before the best winter tyre from just 100km/h (62mph.)
The Vredestein Wintrac was the best winter tyre in the dry braking test, and placed fifth in dry handling maing it an impressive performance for the new Dutch tyre.

Wet
In the wet, the winter tyres performed better against the reference summer tyre, with six winter patterns beating the summer tyre in wet braking.
The Bridgestone Blizzak LM005 continued its run of impressive wet braking results, stopping the test vehicle two meters ahead of the second placed Hankook, with the new Firestone WinterHawk 4 also performing well.
The budget winter tyre really highlighted how poor value cheap winter tyres can be, taking 14 meters longer to stop the car than the Bridgestone!

I fail to see how the Kleber can be put higher than the Bridgestone given the performance of the Bridgestone in wet and snow, the most important two aspects for a winter tyre that is likely to be used Autumn to Spring.
This is a guess, auto bild run a devaluation system, if a tyre has a major flaw it can't finish ahead of others that don't. The Kleber doesn't have any major flaws, but the Bridgestone does.
Is it me or the Kleber Krisalp HP3 (Nº 3) and the BFGoodrich GForce Winter2 (Nº 11) have the exact same tread pattern? They even seem to have the same performance in almost all categories, except in the dry.
yes, both tires are identical, so it is really weird to see this differences in the tests.
Also interesting is to compare results for BFGoodrich with actual ADAC test, for dry absolutely different results.
There's potentially some compounding tweaks between the two if they're going out at different prices, it's cheaper to use the same mould and tweak the ingredients.
I would say that the key is in importance of series (DOT, eg). Somewhere »Kleber« have advance, on other test »BF Goodrich«.
This said, there's a pub story that »Klebers« have bigger QC tolerances.
Also, I didn't saw this particular winter »Laufenn« in vivo, but on pictures looks very similar - if not the same - as »Hankook«. In light of fact that »Hankook« has informed us that some older models will be rebranded as »Laufenn« (starting officially with »Laufenn Z Fit EQ LK03« instead »Hankook Ventus S1 K107«) and information about new Alp-type winter »Hankook« from yesterday, could this already be the case with tested winter's?
»Fulda Kristall Control HP2« was on the test, not »Fulda EcoControl HP2«.
Good spot, that had actually been updated but the website had an old copy with the error cached :(
