215/55 R16 EU tyre label data

EU label values are declared for each individual size, so the figures here are exact for 215/55 R16 rather than a range across a model. 612 tyres carry label data in this size. The most common load index is 97 (up to 730 kg per tyre). Speed ratings on offer: Y (300 km/h), W (270 km/h), V (240 km/h), H (210 km/h), T (190 km/h), S (180 km/h), R (170 km/h), Q (160 km/h). 335 tyres in this size carry the 3PMSF severe snow marking.

A Best wet grip

76 tyres in this size hold the top EU wet grip rating, class A. The highest scoring on Tyre Reviews:

A Lowest rolling resistance

The most fuel efficient choice: 7 tyres in this size reach rolling resistance class A. The highest scoring on Tyre Reviews:

66dB Quietest tyres

The quietest 215/55 R16 tyres are labelled at 66 dB external noise:

Label values come from the EU EPREL database and apply to the EU market versions of each tyre. Wet grip and rolling resistance run from class A (best) to E; noise is the measured drive-by figure. A good label is a floor, not a verdict - the tests and owner ratings above tell you far more.

How long do 215/55 R16 tyres last?

Across 58 end of life reviews in this size, a typical set of tyres was worn out after 20,000 miles. Half of all worn-out sets lasted between 11,000 miles and 30,000 miles.

Distances are self-reported by drivers whose review marked the set as worn out; figures are medians, so a single unusual report cannot move them. Driving style and the car matter more than the size itself.

What does 215/55 R16 mean?

A 215/55 R16 tyre is 215 mm wide, its sidewall is 55% of that width (118 mm) tall, and it fits a 16 inch wheel. That gives an overall diameter of roughly 643 mm.

Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady 215/55 R16 Subaru Forester 60,000 miles October 28, 2026

Of all the tire sets I've owned, these were so good, with so little to complain about, that I bought another set on closeout! Absolutely, would put them on all my Subarus. Alas, Goodyear has updated so on to something else.

Hankook Ventus V2 Concept 2 H457 215/55 R16 Toyota Scion XD 20,000 miles October 25, 2026

These are terrible. I still had 7/32 inch after almost 20k miles, but switched them out as my daughter drives this car and they are terrible in the wet.

Dunlop Sport BluResponse 215/55 R16 Ford mondeo 2.2 20,000 miles September 9, 2026

UPDATE: 4-Year / 8,000 miles Follow-Up
I am currently running my final pair of Dunlop Sport BluResponse tyres on the rear axle, but I will be replacing them permanently before next season due to ongoing rubber degradation. While dry and wet grip remained acceptable over time, the severe tread block cracking developed far too early despite low mileage and optimal indoor winter storage. The compound simply hasn't held up chemically, proving that this model lacks the long-term durability needed for low-mileage drivers. I cannot recommend these tyres and will be switching to a different premium brand for my next set.

Bridgestone Turanza ER300 215/55 R16 Ford C Max 2.0 TDCI 10,000 miles September 6, 2026

I want to be clear that these are tires sold by SC EUROCLIN SRL, a tyre shop located in Romania, Baia Mare, Str. Vasile Lucaciu nr. 167, and that they do not reflect the manufacturing standards of Bridgestone.

4 years, including 3 winters of which 2 typical central eastern Europe's snowy ones. Great in the snow - problems only 3 times maybe startig up the hill in the snow with ice. Weaker on warm wet - but still better than typical winter tyre. I drove mostly in the city and on motorways. People say there is difference in quality between Made in Poland and Romania and Poland is much better (depends on the size, mine was Poland). Next winter would be styruggle but until October will be still ok. Saved a lot $ on changing season tyres.

Yokohama iceGUARD iG53 215/55 R16 Honda Civic 1.5T 20,000 miles June 20, 2026
After, now, 6 winter seasons: these are going in the bin.

From new, wet performance was abysmal and concerning bordering on alarmingly bad. Damp roads, wet roads, slush, or anything with a breath of moisture in the air: wet traction is just outright bad.

Dry performance is just fine for a midrange winter tire. I do need to adjust my driving style when I first mount them for the season but nothing I wouldn’t say is “bad”. On grooved concrete roads, though, the tires will try and wander - it’s a bit disconcerting the first time.

Snow and ice performance, unlike the damp, is actually quite good.

These are not something I would ever buy again. The wet performance is unbelievably awful, and as temperatures float above / below freezing : it’s just unacceptable.

Where this data comes from

Owner ratings are submitted through the review form on this site, naming the tyre, the size and the distance covered, and are checked by hand before publication. Test results come from independent published tyre tests indexed by size, and label values from the EU EPREL database.

About the TR Score

The Tyre Reviews Score rates each tyre out of 10 using independent test results and the full body of owner reviews, so you can check a car-specific ranking against the wider evidence.

Who does the testing

Every test published as a Tyre Reviews test is run by Jonathan Benson, who has been testing tyres independently since 2007.
