205/40 17 Tyre Review Highlights

Vredestein Quatrac Pro rated 79% while driving a Ford Fiesta ST200
Driving on a combination of roads for 3000 spirited miles
Another great alternative to low profile wheels that roll on mainly mild climates. I bought this ones as they were very well priced and the new Michelin Cross Climate 2 were not (yet) available on the required size, to be used as a Winter alternative to the Pilot Sport 4. Once again, using an All-Season tyre proved to be the right choice for this particular car and location (Southeast England) especially when compared to the full winter set of SottoZero 3 I had before. These tyres are, it seems, fairly unknown on the testing/reviewing world as I see the regular Quatrac (and the old 5) which have a different tread pattern everywhere (including here on tyre reviews), but potentially a similar compound mix (@Jonathan - this one is for you, can you include the UHP pattern of the Quatrac Pro on a review? I think it needs updating! thanks!). What they are for sure is a very interesting tyre that retained very important dynamic characteristics from the summer tyre design, maybe due to the dual pattern they have on the surface. Pros: - Excellent dry and wet grip, within a wide range of temperatures; - The sidewall looks soft but behaves remarkably similar to the Pilot Sport 4 in this size; - Not fascinating in feel and feedback but very progressive and allows to play or position the car mid corner as if wearing a set of summers; - Comfort seems to be quite acceptable! - Did I mention how dynamic they are even in the wet?! - Price Cons: - Rolling resistance and noise are not brilliant; - Despite my very limited experience with this particular set, they did not seem to be the kind of all-season that enjoys snow and ice... They are just ok to take you out until you reach a gritted surface but I wouldn't take them much further for a snowy hill adventure. Conclusion: These tyres are a unicorn for small hot hatches that rarely see any snow, but have the need of park their ultra high performance summer tyres for the winter, or like to be safe with a get out of jail card. The grip levels in both dry and wet are always higher than expected at both low and mild temperatures, and they seemed very progressive. I wouldn't take them out for a remote snowy location as I feel that it isn't at all the aim of these tyres but I can imagine them being able to perform well in a technical circuit for a winter track day and that says a lot. Alternatives? Yes, the new Michelin Cross Climate 2 are now available on this size but for the use I give to the car and the price they both sit on, the Vredenstein Quatrac Pro were a very pleasant surprise, which I can no doubt recommend!

Pirelli PZero Nero rated 21% while driving a Fiat 500 Abarth
Driving on track for 0 spirited miles
For light weight Fiat Abarth 500, 180HP, I found these bit crap. During hard braking and cornering tyres are squealing. I feel more like floating, during hard driving its unstable. I found these very dangerous for my style of driving. Although for legal road driving it will be pretty fine, but not suitable for track. Michelin Pilot Exalto were much better.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 rated 77% while driving a Volkswagen (B8) 1.4 TSI (150 Hp) DSG ACT
Driving on mostly country roads for 3000 spirited miles
Went from a set of rapid budget tyres which came on the car to these and I was shocked. I never knew a car could handle so well on a set of premium tyres. they transformed the handling and grip of the car, they honeslty feel like you are on rails when driving on these tyres. Only issue i have had is that the life of the tyre is extremely short, although i do alot of backroad driving and spirited drives. I only managed to squeeze about 3 months and 3000 miles out of these tyres. i am about t replace them and will consider using them again however may go michelin. Overall i do reccomend these tyres if you are in the market.

Federal SS595 SUPER STEEL rated 77% while driving a Fiat 500 Abarth
Driving on a combination of roads for 13000 spirited miles
First off this is for a lightweight, hard-driven track car. I don't really concern myself with road noise or cushy sidewall as my car is on coilovers and driven very spiritedly on mountain roads and track as well as daily driven to work and back. My car came with Pirelli PZero Neros and those were absolute garbage(horrible understeer, absolutely no sidewall flex, and zero feedback). I then tried some Falken Ziex ZX960s and they were miles better than the Pirellis. After I wore those out I tried the Federal 595s and while loads better than the Pirellis still for a quarter the price, they are not quite as good as the Falkens. But they are half the price. Wet traction is pretty bad but not deadly by any means as long as you don't drive like it is dry. That being said I have driven them on a slightly damp track and still managed decent lap times with only slight hydroplaning in standing water. I have about 5 track sessions on this set as well as daily driving for about 13000 miles and am now looking for replacements. For a heavier, more powerful car I can totally see these being overwhelmed, but my experience in a sub-3K Lb car is excellent. I'm thinking Federal 595RS-Rs for track-only use and a set of Federal Evoluzions for daily to see if I can get better all weather capabilities but if I was to do one set for every use again it would be these 595s.

Nexen N Fera SU4 rated 79% while driving a SEAT Ibiza FR TDi
Driving on mostly country roads for 11000 spirited miles
Absolute top for dry grip and handling, but wear... Inner edge worn after 16k km, it is also a thing of too much negative camber I run on, but overall, they are at 60% after 16 000 km.. N7000 were better I would say.

Dunlop Direzza DZ102 rated 42% while driving a Volkswagen polo 1.4cc 16V
Driving on a combination of roads for 600 spirited miles
I had previously dunlop LM704 195/45/16. Was highly disappointed with dunlop, was planning to get michelin ps4. It would lose grip on normal cruising in the rain, my little 1.6 16v would let the tyres even scrabble in 3rd gear if I had launch the car. Upgrade to 17inch wheels with dizerra dz102 the comfort levels much better, the grip is unreal, I could not break them loose, not even in the rain. They handle quite well. For the price Its a no brainer. Its quieter than falken ecorun 914s on rougher roads. I will buy them again! Even cornering at speeds on wet roads, its the same speeds I do on dry roads and I still cannot believe the way they grip.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 rated 73% while driving a MINI Cooper S

The tyre is a bit weird. The car might have good handling but it feels like there is no connection between the driver and the road. Its just like neutral…

Falken ZIEX ZE310 EcoRun rated 70% while driving a Mitsubishi Colt version R
Driving on a combination of roads for 4400 average miles
7000 km later the tyre is not what exactly I was expecting. I Drive a Mitsubishi CZT. Is a light car with a lot of engine performance. The tyre is OK in the dry, it gets better when it comes to working temperature( and this happens fast!). The side walls are very soft. The feeling i get when i am pushing harder in a corner is that the tyre first touch the asphalt with the rim and then it turns the car! The small pot holes does not affect the car at all the tyre absorbs them! It is quiet enough on the road. During the rain these falkens are good. They give you confidence that will stop the car and turn it when and where you want considering the conditions. In terms of wear the tyre can give you really high mileage. Now to conclude all these. The previous tyre was goodyear f1 assymetric 3 . They cannot be compared to each other in any aspect. The f1 is much better over all.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 rated 87% while driving a Suzuki swift sport
Driving on mostly country roads for 10 spirited miles
Absolutely phenomenal tyres, fantastic grip in the dry, and really good grip in the wet. I went through a set of fronts on my Swift Sport in around 10,000 miles, and most of that is on backroads so is semi spirited.
